Matt Corby, ‘Brother’ (2011).

As I was trolling through the endless wonders of youtube a wee while ago I fumbled my way onto this song.  The thing that struck me was that the video that I watched was 9 minutes long and it had my full attention the whole way.  Nine minutes for a song is a long time to hold an audiences attention - pathetic isn’t it? - but I remember being enthralled with Mr Corby all the way through, from introduction where he shies away from discussing what the song is about, to that stunned moment at the end where the presenter herself is blown away.  I too was blown away but in a more silent, reserved sort of ‘damn that’s good’ kind of way.

I want to know what happened.  I want to know everything that has happened in this young man’s life.  I want to know it all!!  He must be good.  I’m not usually interested in people….

This is the nine minute clip:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IglwAVcuE6c&feature=related

Watch it.  I’d dare you to, but you’re too clever to give in to something as inane and childish as a dare… right?

Xavier Rudd, ‘Food in the Belly’ (2005).

This was an album purchased in the days when Borders were still a money making business, probably just before the fall of that mighty empire when they lived on Queen Street and you could spend entire weeks non-stop perusing the floors of goodies.  On a whim I purchased this album when I had a little taster of it on those horrible communal stereo things with headphones.

This is the sort of album that hippies would listen to if they allowed themselves electricity.  The lyrics are dedicated to Poor Earth and its battle against Naughty Man and then same said Naughty Man versus Poor Downtrodden Man.

I sound like I’m poking fun and I am a little bit, but I did really quite enjoy this album but unfortunately it’s relegated to a quick skip these days because I killed it for myself when I first bought it.  Nevertheless in forcing myself to listen to this song in its entirety I was reminded of my mild fondness for the music.  Well done Xavy.  Oh and nice didjeridu skills too.
